  • Video food for thought (and pure entertainment): So maybe you've heard about the filmmaker/comedian who is living Ikea for a week. You can check out the site here: http://www.marklivesinikea.com/. A funny stunt and a marketing gift for Ikea, yes, but also a good example of one possible approach to video storytelling. Each of his videos are short, comedic slivers that alone might not hold much meaning. But strung together they tell a larger story. Sort of like adapting the print idea of "vignettes" to the video camera... Amanda Zamora, 1/17/08
  • multimediashooter.com:is a great Web site to check out multimedia stories produced by newspapers. It goes to show that some of the most compelling work is done simply with strong images and audio._Hank 1.18.08**
  • Journalism 2.0: How to Survive and Thrive - Gonna go out on a limb and call this a must-read. J-Lab gives a fantastic survival guide for journalists charting their course into the next wave of new media. - Amanda Zamora, 1/18/08
  • Video of Dan teaching last week's class: http://blip.tv/file/632763/Hank, 1.29.08- Hank 1.31.08http://thephoenix.com/article_ektid55461.aspx -
  • Check out this link. It's simply a good, old fashioned literary journalism piece, which I think there's still room for in this changing trade. www.lawrence.com/news/2008/jan/28/shoots_daggers/ -- Michelle (Think I posted this on 1.30)
  • After Tuesday’s class discussion of the Romney vs. Johnson video, I came across this article on Eric Fehrnstrom, the press secretary who you see scolding Johnson.
  • Here is a Tribune story on the two guys that started realclearpolitics.com. They had 50 million pages views in the last month. _Hank 2.4.08
  • Boys Post Video, Girls Blog, Both Hate E-Mail - I came across this article today. It's about a survey concerning teens and their "online content creation" usage (link to survey in story). Some of the findings were interesting, others were expected. I had to laugh when I came to these sentences: "Among all teens, however, e-mail is increasingly becoming the communication mode of last resort... E-mail is 'only for strangers or when you're e-mailing companies and ordering things.'" The other finding I was surprised about is that teens are apparently more likely than adults to restrict access to content that they share online....keeping their parents, who are Facebook or MySpace friends, out (not surprising). I suppose at least they are aware of and taking note of online privacy. - Christie 2/7
  • Really interesting article in today’s (2.11) New York Times on how no part of the presidential campaigns are off limits or that the candidates have down time. Paid, professional off-air reporters film the rope lines and anything else that happens…all the time. “We basically keep our eyes and ears open at all times,” said Eloise Harper, above, the ABC News off-air reporter who shot the video of the flags falling behind Senator Clinton. “We’re always watching the candidates." -Hank 2.11.08
  • Stream of Consciousness: Twittering Campaign Coverage (Politweets) - az, 2.5.08
  • Web Sites Paint Obama as a Mac, Clinton as a PC (Sci-Tech Today) - az, 2.5.08
  • TinyURL  This is a pretty neat site if you've never seen it before. If you have a really long web address, whether you are sending a link to friends, family, classes, the generator will shrink it to a "tiny URL". Now you'll never have to worry about long links taking up lines of an email, webpage, etc, and ensure others receive the complete link. Very helpful! -Christie 2/14
  • WebSpeak: a nice recurring feature from Poynter on web journalism lingo. az, 2.15.08
  • coolinfographics.blogspot.com Here is a site that has some very cool static and Flash graphics. Be sure to check out the animated timeline of religions as well as the movie on who has nuclear weapons. It is one of the most original ways to present statistical date I have ever seen._Hank 2.25.08
  • Since we were talking about newspaper circulation in different countries I decided to look it up and found interesting results. Here's what the World Association of Newspapers, a nonprofit organization, has to say about World Press Trends for 2007: "The five largest markets for newspapers are: China, with 98.7 million copies sold daily; India, with 88.9 million copies daily; Japan, with 69.1 million copies daily; the United States, with 52.3 million; and Germany, 21.1 million. Circulation sales were up +3.61 percent in Asia in 2006 over the previous year, up +4.55 percent in South America, and down -1.97 percent in North America." Find the rest of the article here. - Darshana 3/4

  • Photoshop Disasters: What happens when you use stock images and *forget* to pay for them (ahem, Nintendo). -- amanda, 3.12.08
  • THE PADA JIBJAB MOVIE, starring: WOONG-JO, CHRISTIE, DEBRA, GRETCHEN, BRANDY, T.C. and HANK!: http://www.jibjab.com/sendables/view/osMwfw2gJ9ffZW9RKI5yEwyJ
  • The World's 50 Most Powerful Blogs - The Observer - From Prince Harry in Afghanistan to Tom Cruise ranting about Scientology and footage from the Burmese uprising, blogging has never been bigger. It can help elect presidents and take down attorney generals while simultaneously celebrating the minutiae of our everyday obsessions. Here are the 50 best reasons to log on... (amanda, 3.12.08)
  • Measuring the Size of Your Digital Shadow - I came across this short NYT article bit today. I'd never heard of the phrase "digital shadow" and found it interesting. They found the ambient digital information about you (aka digital shadow) exceeds the digital information you generate yourself (emails, viewing videos, posting pictures, etc). Digital shadow information includes web surfing histories, mailing lists, surveillance images captured, and credit-card purchasing trails.  Christie 3/13
