Every year, New Media Consortium (NMC) publishes an annual Horizon Report.
In the report, using Delphi method, they conduct research on what will be the next key emerging technologies to be used in teaching, learning, or creative expression within learning-focused organizations. However, I think this report will also be very useful to anticipate what might be the key emerging technolgy in the public affairs.
It may also be a good source for what should be considered in web design in the future.
This year (2008), they selected 6 technologies as follows.
Time-to-Adoption: One Year or Less
1. Grassroots Video
2. Collaboration Webs
Time-to-Adoption: Two to Three Years
3. Mobile Broadband
4. Data Mashups
Time-to-Adoption: Four to Five Years
5. Collective Intelligence
6. Social Operating Systems
